American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Allots $16.8 Billion for EERE
Feb.17, 2009 — President Barack Obama today signed into law the AmericanRecovery and Reinvestment Act (H.R. 1) at the Denver Museum of Natureand Science. Alongside Vice President Joe Biden, Colorado Governor BillRitter, and Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, the president approved the$787 billion economic recovery package, the largest in the nation'shistory.
Emblematic of the bill's focus on investment in renewable andefficiency technologies, the President was introduced by Blake Jones,CEO of Namaste Solar—a solar energy company based in Colorado.
An unprecedented $16.8 billion of the American Recovery andReinvestment Act will be appropriated for the Department of Energy'sOffice of Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) programs andinitiatives.
After passing both houses of Congress and going to a joint Senate-House Conference Committee, the final appropriations include:
- $5 billion for the Weatherization Assistance Program
- $3.1 billion for the State Energy Program
- $3.2 billion for Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grants
- $2.5 billion for Applied Research, Development, Demonstration and Deployment
- $2 billion for Advanced Battery Manufacturing Grants
- $400 million for Transportation Electrification
- $300 million for an Energy Efficient Appliance Rebate Program and ENERGY STAR®
- $300 million for an Alternative Fueled-Vehicles Pilot Grant Program
